The history of Port Washington dates back to the 17th century when a small group of English settlers acquired land from the Dutch in a region flanked by beautiful bodies of water. The Dutch, claiming that Henry Hudson's voyages in 1609 gave them the rights to Long Island, had purchased what amounts to the western half of Nassau County from the Matinecocks, members of the Algonquin tribes who inhabited much of the North Shore of Long Island. Sint Sink, "Place of Many Stones," was the name that the Matinecocks gave to this neck of land nestled between scenic Hempstead Harbor and Manhasset Bay.

The first English settlers eyed the new land as a cow pasture for their cattle, fencing off 8,000 acres from what is now Roslyn to Plandome to keep the cattle on the peninsula. The five-mile-long fencing consisted of "gattes", or panels, each 11 feet long. The settlers were allowed to pasture one cow for every gatte they constructed. Not surprisingly, the peninsula became known as Cow Neck, and the bay on the west side ( Now Manhasset Bay) was called Cow Bay. Real Estate Brokers Port Washington
